Via Creative Class a map showing the nations that are most desirable for immigrants. Both Australia and America have made a great show of slowing 'illegal' immigration which politically is more a show to nativism than anything really useful.

The US has a double whammy as new laws which support the TSA and other security measures are nerve wracking for immigrants as well and not a pleasant experience. Recently when driving across Arizona to San Diego in California, I was stopped on Route 9 by the Border Patrol and questioned about where my green card was. Going through customs and borders for me is a time of nervousness as an arbitrary decision can remove me from my family and property.

However, even with those political under currents, they are not enough to dampen the desire to immigrate to those countries.
