  • I meant to say, a lot of the commentary about 'awful coffee' and about Australia having a 'sophisticated coffee culture' - quotes from Quiggin's site - seem to be missing the obvious points that a) Starbucks is closing a lot if US outlets as well, and b) Gloria Jeans seems to do very good business at any of the half dozen stores I have ever been in.

    They are half right, though. Starbucks was mad to open stores in inner-city areas where there are lots of good cafes. Starbucks needed to be out in the suburbs where a barista is someone who helped you beat that shoplifting charge.
